Training is a cornerstone of home dialysis

The stay•safe MyTraining VR is an innovative training tool, that can support you in preparing your patients for their peritoneal dialysis therapy at home.

In a study with over 2,000 PD patients by Figueiredo et al. in 2015, a longer training time and starting training prior to catheter implantation were associated with lower peritonitis rates.1

In 2018, a randomized controlled trial with 100 patients by Chang et al. showed the importance of regular retraining, as “[…] longer hours of retraining reduced the incidence of exit site infection (ESI) and peritonitis”2

The Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study published in 2020 by Perl et al. covered 7,051 adult PD patients in 209 facilities across 7 countries and found that training duration of 6 or more (vs <6) days was positively associated with lower peritonitis rates.3

stay•safe MyTraining VR can support your patient training program

The stay•safe MyTraining VR is a digital training tool that can support you in preparing your patients for their peritoneal dialysis therapy at home:

With virtual reality, you can give your patients additional training opportunities, so they can repeat the steps of the bag exchange at their own pace as often as needed.

You support different learning styles with a mix of visual, auditory, interactive and text elements. The immersive 3D environment supports learning by doing, making it engaging and intuitive to use.

With the different language options available, you can overcome communication barriers.

As a stand-alone system, the virtual reality training can be set up anywhere – no installation needed, and it is simple to start.

What to expect from stay•safe MyTraining VR

The stay•safe MyTraining VR shows a home-like environment. Users can learn to prepare the virtual home for a sterile procedure and adjust the environmental conditions. They are introduced to the materials used for the procedure and a simulated catheter allows users to perform a virtual bag exchange on themselves .

The stay•safe MyTraining VR offers two modes for the CAPD procedure: a learning mode and a test.

Learning Mode

The learning mode offers step-by-step guidance from preparation to set-up, connection and finally, disconnection. For each step, an instruction is offered by a virtual nurse followed by an action the patient needs to fulfil before the level is completed.

Test Mode

Once the user feels confident in their abilities to perform the bag exchange, their knowledge can be tested in a test mode. The test is not guided. Instead, the user performs the procedure step by step and is corrected automatically if they miss a step.

How to include stay•safe MyTraining VR in your training concept

The stay•safe MyTraining VR supports you in teaching CAPD to dialysis patients, caretakers and other health care professionals. It cannot replace a full, hands-on patient training by a trained professional and it is not intended to do so. It is a training tool just like any brochure, video, website or training apron you may use to teach your patient. As such, staysafe MyTraining VR can help…

…introduce Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients and their relatives to CAPD as a treatment option

As part of the educative conversation with a patient who needs to start dialysis, it can be used to increase the visibility of home therapies as an option for patients. While hemodialysis can often be shown directly in the dialysis center, where patients can talk with each other about the treatment, peritoneal dialysis may be less visible to new patients. Virtual Reality can show patients what a home treatment might look like to help them make an informed decision about their treatment of choice.

…prepare new patients for later hands-on training

Before the catheter insertion or while still waiting for the exit site to heal after the catheter insertion, stay•safe MyTraining VR can already be used for dry training. The training can be done in a seated position and at a self-determined pace. Training in VR before or after the catheter insertion is intended to help patients be better prepared when starting the hands-on training.

…offer patients additional training opportunities during the initial patient training

Hands-on training is usually conducted alongside the normal treatment cycle of three to four bag exchanges per day. In addition, training with staysafe MyTraining VR can offer patients the opportunity to learn and repeat the treatment steps at their own pace.

…refresh patients’ training during regular check-ins

During their regular check-ins, patients can use stay•safe MyTraining VR to refresh or test their knowledge of the CAPD procedure.

…repeat the CAPD steps with Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) patients before an intermediate switch

Most APD patients also learn the steps for a CAPD treatment as part of their initial training, because it can be useful as a back-up, e.g. on vacation or while treating peritonitis. If necessary, the training with staysafe MyTraining VR can help patients who do not regularly perform a manual bag exchange to re-familiarize themselves with the procedure.

…educate new colleagues on what PD treatment looks like

You can also use staysafe MyTraining VR to educate new colleagues and show other healthcare professionals what a home treatment can look like, how other treatment options work and what patients learn to do by themselves at home.
